This is an open star cluster, called The Pleiades. Its scientific name is Messier 45. It lies in the constellation of Taurus. The Pleiades can be seen with unaided eye as a fuzzy ball in the sky. Take a bino and count the stars. With naked eye you can count up to seven stars,so they are called the seven sisters, based in the greek mythology. An EOS 20D fixed on a 8 inch telescope was used for this picture. The total exposure time was 90 minutes.
Do you know that when I was young I could stare at the southern sky and after a while I could count about 18 stars.. these days I can just make out an indistinct blue but I can still find them in the sky. Beautiful shot.
in this pic, the stars might look very bright, but to naked eye, it is impossible to see the stars between the very bright ones. for such an image, absolutely dark sky is needed. during the exposure time of app. 90 minutes, there mustn't be absolutely any motion. the telescope must be fixed on a stable mount.
Look at my gallery, I even tried to recreate that scene.
man,what can i say.congrats!
